The Political Miracle We Need

We need a great and rapid awakening to an utterly different way of life. We need it because it’s the only remedy for the terrible dangers that are rising. I’m calling it a “miracle” because many people believe human nature makes such a great change impossible. I have a different view of human nature, and I believe the awakening can happen. But I don’t know whether it will happen. I’m doing the little I can to help it happen. I hope you will too.

For ages we’ve had war, poverty, racism, sexism, lies, and many other unnecessary cruelties, too many to address one by one. And now global warming is speeding up toward a great tipping point, and at the same time the chances for nuclear war are growing. Our old world is about to end; we must look for a new one.

Our many problems, extinction-level and smaller, are consequences of one root problem: our separateness from each other. Competition for survival replaces friendship with fear and hate. When we do not share, we must trade; that increases inequality and thus concentrates power, which corrupts. Separateness cannot remain neutral: Whomever we do not love, we objectify and eventually use and abuse. And the externalized costs of trade are ecocidal and will soon kill king and slave alike.

This underlying root of our problems is not always obvious. For instance, our military is named “defense.” But that’s a lie supported by both money parties. Actually all our many many wars are mass murders to make a few rich men richer. The corporate press repeats the lie, because it is owned by those same rich men.

Another not-so-obvious example: the many mass shootings and many more single shootings. We are told that these stem from the over-availability of guns and/or from mental illness. But why do so many people even want guns, and what causes so much mental illness? Answer: It’s not just the individual shooters, but our entire society that is insane, as we compete against each other for survival.

If the problem is separateness, then the solution is friendship. But that must be manifested concretely: We must share everything. Well, not your toothbrush or your house, but yes, we must share the ability to get a toothbrush and a house. No more poor or foreign; no one left behind. It’s an utterly different world.

Yes, the old ruling class will try to hold onto power, and there will be some fighting, some sort of “revolutionary” battle. But that is really a secondary issue. The really big issue is, will most people break away from their old worldview, and embrace the awakening to a new and utterly different world? Are most people willing to stop fighting for separate lives, and greet the dawn as the brothers and sisters that they really are?

Most people believe that our present way of life is the only way possible; they are encouraged in that belief by the corporate press. But it wasn’t always like this. We switched from sharing to hoarding 12,000 years ago, but that was only cultural, not genetic. Admittedly, that’s a simplified history, but it contains enough truth to tell us we are capable of returning to a culture of sharing. That is the miracle we must seek.
