Capitalism Kills

Capitalism causes random shootings, war, and other major killings, in at least three ways:

1. Driving people crazy. Our dog-eat-dog competition replaces empathy with a fear of unemployment, homelessness, hunger, shame. This fear encourages hate, lies, bullying, authoritarianism, racism, sexism, etc. Finally some young man snaps and starts shooting at random, or enlists to “serve” in the national mafia.

2. Targeting scapegoats. Capitalism teaches those with power to hunger for more. So demagogues blame our problems on immigrants, foreigners, anyone different. And victim-blaming comes easily to people who want to believe the world is already just.

3. Enriching the enablers. Congress and the president start wars based on lies, bringing profit to arms companies such as Boeing, Ray­theon, Halliburton, and Blackwater. Meanwhile, congress and the president leave big companies unregulated – big oil, big pharma, big ag, big tech, big gun manufacturers – with lethal but profitable consequences. All these companies give kickbacks to congress members through super PACs, speakers’ fees, investments, etc. Gilens and Page proved statistically that our public policies favor the rich, regardless of election results. Our so-called “democracy” has been a thinly disguised plutocracy ever since the USA’s founding in land theft, genocide, slavery, indentured servitude.

Other major killings. Our children protest threats to their future – a chance of bullets now, or a much greater chance of climate apocalypse soon. Climate change is speeding up, due to tipping points and feedback loops that are too rarely mentioned by the IPCC. Climate activists in the streets shout “Hey plutocrats! Listen to the climatologists!” But for forty years our plutocrats have profited from big oil and ignored climatologists. By now we should all be shouting “Hey general public! Let’s get rid of plutocracy and the profit system – they are killing us!”
